FIOS TV – Some bad things

There have been some bad experiences so far with Verizon FIOS tv:

- the FIOS HD DVR has settings for all season passes. The TiVo allows for individual settings per season pass. This is annoying when I want to save 10 Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations, but only 1 of the local nightly news.

- the guide seems to be out of date with shows and lengths. Although perhaps that will solve itself.. but I would have expected it to solve itself by now. (6 days of being connected)

- I still don’t have cable cards for my series 3. However.. calling and threatening to cancel my service has caused them to pull some strings and get someone out here tomorrow.

I still haven’t cancelled my Comcast tv.. hopefully tomorrow I’ll get the cable cards, and things will be back to some sense of normalcy.. if normalcy on tv is “Clash Of The Choirs”.

Stupid fraking writers strike.

FIOS TV – So Far So Good

So far, so good in the FIOS TV switch.

The upside compared to Comcast:

- A lot more HD channels compared to our local Comcast lineup
- Cheaper per month
- The Verizon DVR is pretty good. The user interface is quick to respond, unlike my older TiVo Series 2 boxes.

The downsides compared to Comcast:

- No cable cards. I found that out the day of the install, but I decided to go ahead anyway to get it installed. I’m going to hopefully reschedule on Monday to get them. For now no TiVo Series 3 in the house.

- In Oregon, Verizon doesn’t allow the first 40 channels to be viewed without a cable card or cable box. This is different that my original understanding of them being broadcast in analog. I have a Sony HD tv that has a digital tuner in it, and it doesn’t get any channels. It means less tv’s in the house that can get any channels, and potentially a higher cable tv bill if I rent more set top boxes.

Verizon FIOS TV

I am, as I type this, getting Verizon FIOS TV installed at home. I’m quite looking forward to getting home tonight and trying it out.

It’ll be nice to have competition in television services – and nice to not send any more money to Comcast.

Another report over the weekend on what it’s like. Welcome to Oregon Verizon FIOS TV!

FSJ: This Hollywood writers strike cracks me up

This Hollywood writers strike cracks me up

(Via The Secret Diary of Steve Jobs.)

Writers, listen to me. I mean this from the depths of my Jobsian heart. Thank you. By clinging to your networks and hampering their efforts, you’re helping the whole ship sink faster. You’re making my job easier.

Funny, I was thinking about this today, how the writers strike will really cripple television and movies, and people will start to look for other places for content.. like the internet..

Fake Steve Job’s insight is pretty damn amazing..

Serenity The Movie

I just got back from date night with Jennifer, we went out for dinner and saw Serenity The Movie. (Which might have been a mistake because I’m dog sick).

But it was a damn fine movie. Damn fine. Made me wish the idiot(s) that run/ran Fox would have never cancelled it. Hopefully Sci Fi will somehow pick it up and keep it going, or at least another movie.

Go.. see it.. make it successful. Please.

Band Of Brothers DVD

I borrowed Jim’s copy of Band of Brothers like a month ago, and finally got around to watching the first disc tonight.

Wow. This is a very very engaging show – the thing for me that really hit home the beginning of each episode… they interview some of the real solders who were part of Easy Company, the paratrooper jump team. That really hits it home for me personally, these stories aren’t just something some writer has invented, but events people actually went through.

It’s hard for me to fathom what these guys went through. What everyone went through and goes through in all the wars humanity has been through.
