FIOS TV – So Far So Good

So far, so good in the FIOS TV switch.

The upside compared to Comcast:

- A lot more HD channels compared to our local Comcast lineup
- Cheaper per month
- The Verizon DVR is pretty good. The user interface is quick to respond, unlike my older TiVo Series 2 boxes.

The downsides compared to Comcast:

- No cable cards. I found that out the day of the install, but I decided to go ahead anyway to get it installed. I’m going to hopefully reschedule on Monday to get them. For now no TiVo Series 3 in the house.

- In Oregon, Verizon doesn’t allow the first 40 channels to be viewed without a cable card or cable box. This is different that my original understanding of them being broadcast in analog. I have a Sony HD tv that has a digital tuner in it, and it doesn’t get any channels. It means less tv’s in the house that can get any channels, and potentially a higher cable tv bill if I rent more set top boxes.
