Friendship..

I heard a pretty good senior spotlight tonight (which we recorded, I might post a link here).

Anyway.. it got me thinking (and Jennifer agrees) – we don’t have a couple who we can really call our best friends, one who we can really talk to, talk about the ups and downs of marriage, the dog, our wishes and hopes, do bible study with, who are near us in age.

We have a few potentials, but haven’t been able to take that step over the line of “decent friends”. And honestly, I have no idea how to do it. Thoughts? Maybe just really opening up to one of them about this.. I’ve been lacking this in my life for a long time. And tonight it hit home.

Back from Disneyland

We had a pretty good time – I got food poisoning from somewhere on Friday, and ended up burping and hiccuping for 2 1/2 days straight.. quite annoying.. (more to Jennifer than me though).

I think my favourite ride is Buzz Lightyear, me and my cousin-in-law Al played it a lot:

This was on Saturday, August 6th:

Then I started understanding how it is played:

(Sunday)

Then my record setting game (the 100 for the other position was me, for about 5 seconds, trying to use two controllers. Way too hard, don’t bother trying it):

Which, for a brief time, I had 3rd highest score that day (it was early, like 40 minutes into the day):

I’m LUC, (I normally use LWD for things like this, but it was early).

The secret is really to hit the moving triangle targets, over and over. If you hit one once, don’t move on, keep hitting it and hitting it.

All in all, it was a pretty good time.. Although it was good to get back home, sleep in our own bed, and do a bit of bug fixing at work.

Random Thoughts on Mission 2005 to Freeport Bahamas

At the gym tonight I was thinking about the mission trip this year, and why it’s affected me more than last years – and I think it comes down to me being more engaged on this trip.

I met more of the locals, talked with them, went to them to stores. I met their sons and daughters. It was more real to me than the orphans in Mexico.

Ah.. I also bet it’s because Bahamians speak English too, I didn’t think of that until now.

The different between the people on the island who live in places like 8 Mile Rock (the town we worked in), compared to the luxury of living in a hotel, or being in the area of the fancy hotels and downtown Freeport is really dramatic.

Ah.. I’m not expressing things well.. needless to say when I go to places like this again (think places like Cabo in Mexico) I’m going to try and get out of the ‘tourist’ areas, and see the real people.

I leave you with a shot a friend took on the trip, of a local older gentleman, sitting on his front porch. Click for a larger image on Flickr.
